Alliance of Women Directors is a nonprofit organisation committed to:
- Increasing opportunities for women directors in film, television and new media
- Enhancing relationships between members and the creative community
- Protecting the independent voice of women directors
- Providing support and advocacy for emerging filmmakers through resources, tradecraft workshops and mentorship opportunities
Established in 1997, it is the only organisation solely dedicated to education, support and advocacy for women directors in the entertainment industry. Each member has achieved professional status by having directed at least one long or short-form narrative film, television program, documentary, commercial or new media program that has been recognised by the creative community.
AWD fosters a community of professionals to advance the art, craft and visibility of women directors in the world of film, television and new media. AWD is dedicated to creating opportunity for women’s voices in our industry, because we believe it is vital that stories are told from all perspectives.
AWD member Kate Rees Davies, is an award-winning director. She is chair of the “Industry Panel for change” committee, an initiative which hosts panels at film festivals and other industry events in Los Angeles. The panels bring producers, writers and directors together to discuss ways to increase the number of women directors being hired by the studios.
